He experiments using different paint techinques,. Artist Jon Young stores a massive sculpture. With an oversized scale larger than six feet in height and incredibly wide , it immediately hypnotizes anyone who dares look at it. Punctuating the all-white rhythmic maze of brick, a linear neon green symbol shoots upward, subverting the solitary work. The contrast of the two extremes, linked within a singular plane, traverses two vastly different epochs of art and invite introspection within the bounds of its reflective surface. His work aims to place viewers in a space where they are forced to deal with unconventional, illusionistic surroundings. In this way, he restrains a volatile element within a rigid cage.
My work is about the development of language and signage. I create wood, sand, and fabric sculptures, that use historical symbols from Paleolithic cave paintings, ancient Greek pottery, and even the line in the sand from Hollywood Westerns and Looney Tune cartoons. Through this use of popular imagery of the US West, I ground the waymarks in the mythologies of the frontier, an ideological concept popularized by the historian Fredrick Jackson Turner, which has signified both European opportunity and indigenous genocide. Reflecting this duel nature of the US West, my work is informed both by my nomadic childhood in a constantly uprooted US military family and by the cultural displacement of my Native American heritage.
