After surviving the multi-vehicle crash at a construction zone nearby Wakaw this week, Jeff Helperl wants to see politicians step in with tougher rules to the trucking industry. The crash occurred around 1 p. The driver of the vehicle behind Helperl was a year-old man who was declared dead at the scene. I hope it never happens again. But there definitely has to be stricter rules in place for these drivers. Then he remembers stopping his truck behind the vehicle in front of him and all of a sudden he was knocked out from the impact and sustained a cut to the back of the head that needed six stitches. Helperl was taken to the Royal University Hospital and was treated for brain bleed and then was released from the hospital on Friday to recover at home. The driver of the semi, Gurmeet Singh Cheema, 38, was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death as well as bodily harm.
